The course aims to capacitate Yemeni youth with concepts of peacebuilding and conflict transformation that allow them to understand and reflect on their own roles in conflict transformation in their communities. It also aims to equip learners with practical conflict analysis mechanisms that empower them to design and implement their own peace initiatives.

The modules in progress introduce key terms and concepts in the field of conflict transformation including conflict, peace, and violence, and provide learners with easily applicable tools of conflict analysis, covering the elements, stages, and challenges of the process, and providing a deeper understanding on how to plan and conduct conflict analysis.

The course further provides learners with basic principles of project design, negotiation and mediation, focusing on how to apply them for peacebuilding purposes. It expands their peacebuilding capacities through reflecting on the challenges and necessary conditions of creating sustainable peace. Additionally, the course places particular focus on exploring the impact of conflict on gender norms and the role of women in peacebuilding. All the content of the course is contextualized to apply gained knowledge and competences to the Yemeni context.

Project Goals 

The self-paced online course aims to strengthen Yemeni youth’s local capacities in the fields of peacebuilding and conflict transformation and expand their competences to become future peacebuilders in their communities.  

Target Group 

Young people in Yemen, with a particular focus on the involvement of girls and women in peaceful conflict transformation. 

Activities 

The 8-module interactive course includes educational videos, interactive exercises, and additional readings and resources. The course will be delivered in Arabic and will put high emphasis on the local context, customs, and culture. Every module will provide an overview of one of the topics through the mentioned formats.

Module one introduces the core concepts of conflict, peace, and violence with reference to the different approaches to their definitions and elements. Module two introduces tools of conflict analysis, enabling learners to reflect on the elements and dynamics of conflicts, then module three dives deeper into the stages of conflict analysis with a particular focus on the challenges and risks of this process.

Next, module four addresses project design for peacebuilding and conflict transformation initiatives, capacitating participants with the necessary competences to be active peacebuilders and lead initiatives in their communities. Module five shifts to basics of negotiation and mediation to enrich participants’ peacebuilding skills. Following this, module six focuses on the concept of sustainability, providing elements of maintaining sustainable peace. Module seven emphasizes the gender aspect of peacebuilding, focusing on the importance of gender equality and the significant role of women in peacebuilding and maintaining peace. Finally, module eight provides insights on Yemen country study enabling participants to reflect on global approaches through Yemeni-specific cases and examples.  

Outcomes/Achievements 

The course will deepen participant’s understanding of different aspects of conflict transformation processes and allow them to reflect on their own role in local conflict transformation processes in their communities. Consequently, it will empower them with the tools and mechanisms they need to design and implement their own peacebuilding actions.
